I was talking in class today about how we perceive violence, and realized that because of the American Media Industry, we were easily accepting gross violence and disturbing images. The special effects in technology had gotten so detailed and accurate that we no longer see super-realistic images of destruction as dangerous or even worth notice.

It reminded me of a year ago, when my first few thoughts watching 9/11 in realtime were, in something like this order:
1)"holy shit"
2)"wow"
3)"the special effects people got it right"

It made me realize that even though we had all seen imagaes of buildings blowing up or soot flying everywhere, there was still some reality. This was not a movie, and that is why it affected people so much. It was not in the realm of the American Media Industry (although, well, that's debatable, but... :)

It was in the realm of reality, and technology has not yet desensitized us from reality. The acropolis has not yet been compressed into a downloadable file.
