You are, by far, one of the least empathetic people I know. Well, not really, but it feels like it right now. What kind of a person watches Lord of the Rings and says "all this killing orcs and stuff would be so much easier if they had machine guns."? If he was trying to elaborate on the world of men, and how their importance is really as inventors and imaginers and stuff, I would understand it. But he says it just to be an ass. To be right.
