I read two books yesterday. Albeit, they were short (each was a little over 100 pages), but they were both worth reading. The first was Flatland by Edwin Abbot, a geometry novel, which I've been meaning to read for several years. I figured since I was going to be a philosopher I may as well read it. I have to go over it again, because I think I was complaining to myself about it while I read it, but I liked the general idea. The analogy was so simple, and I honestly think that's where it's benefit lies, but the book left a lot of questions about Spaceland that I couldn't answer in an afternoon. (I want Mary to keep up teaching me her geometry, because I'm slacking. She's much better at it than I am... And it's harder for me to follow the stage after construction, because it's not as concrete. But I'll work on that, too.)

The second was Anthem, by Ayn Rand. It was like my roommate Eric trying to get out of doing the dishes or something. There were some good ideas, but I have some serious questions, again, about the perspective of good. It's true, that the benefits and rights of an individual can not be overlooked, but I'm not so sure that the rampant individualism she seems to encourage would do exactly what she thinks it would do. It reminds me again of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, where Charlie is told to read Rand, but to "be a filter, not a sponge." And it also reminds me of this year's anti-objectivist movement at St. Johns, which put up a poster titled "Ayn Rand is a Raging Bitch." Hehe, that still makes me chuckle...
