The current trend with computer animated films is to reuse character models. There were only 3 or 4 new characters in Shrek 2. "A Shark's Tale" uses some of the same sharks and creatures as "Finding Nemo" (although they are adding tons of good voice talent, so it will probably be good).
So I'm thinking, why not continue the trend and have Gollum do a spinoff? Maybe right before he falls into the fires of Mt. Doom, he gets magically transported to the end of the 4th age, Los Angeles in 2004. He could get a talk show helping people get over their addictions or something. It'd be Great. It's a shame to waste such a great CG model...

To be fair, the reason there are only 3 or 4 new characters in Shrek 2 is because it's a SEQUAL. Think of how many new characters there were in the first one. ;-)
