Sunday, February 13, 2005 - Threesomes = communism
Mary and I went to see Dr. Drew (TM) Pinksy in the Grand Ballroom on Thursday night... My whole adolescence and childhood flashed before my eyes. What struck me first was the way that the questions hadn't changed since I started listening around 1998 or 1997. Coincidently, that was the last time that Dr. Drew visited UMCP, so I feel some cycle coming full circle here. He's getting old. He's kinda becoming a stubborn old man, in the same way that my dad is. And the worst part is, usually he's right. A big part of the speech was about how kids always need to get drunk to fool around and hook up, and how they're not really dating anymore, and how their brains aren't fully forming anymore because of it. I think he's right, but he was moving fast and putting words into people's mouths. Now that I think about it, his focus was kind of insulting. But maybe, that's the way UMCP really is. I wouldn't be surprised. Tonight was the game against Duke. A bunch of people gathered in Mel's suite. About 20 kids, all in all, throughout the night. The game was great. There were only one or two times when the point difference between the two teams was more than 5 points. And since this was a rivalry, and we swept them for the first time in 10 years, and we're a rowdy bunch, it was obvious that the campus would riot. There wasn't much violence, a few newspaper stands torn up and signs torn down (plus some stupid people throwing glass at the riot police on foot and the riot police on horseback, and if they could have, the riot police circling in the helicopters overhead), but mostly it was just people standing around and chanting. What is it with this school and rioting? About games? Why can't we riot about things that really matter? I talked to my Uncle and Aunt today, told them about Mary, about us and Wisconsin... They're from a lovely conservative part of Minnesota, and we don't quite see eye-to-eye on all of the political opinions, but we're all civil and family and have a grand old time anyway. I told them about maybe going to Wisconsin, and they're first comment was that it was a bit "pink." I just laughed, and said that considering where I grew up it would feel right at home, which it will. Or might, I guess. Anyway, why do we riot so much? About things that really don't matter. What a waste of money it is, to pay for helicopter flight time to shine spotlights on rioters to make sure that windows aren't dropped by bricks. But it was fun. And I'm glad we won. And running around the streets was good, too. It made the commercial intersection we call a downtown feel like a place, for once, with something going on, instead of just a commercial strip. Go Terps.
